What factors should be considered when deciding on scholarships that are provided by BLCEA?

Beit Hanina Local Charitable and Educational Association (BLCEA) started to offer scholarships for students in Alquds University. As you might noticed on this site and on blcea.org, BLCEA have been publishing ads regarding these scholarships.

In the coming summer BLCEA will provide 6 scholarships for new students who want to study in Alquds University. One scholarship will be for the medicine college and five other scholarships in all other colleges.

As a member in BLCEA administrative board, I would like to know your opinions on what factors should be taken into account when deciding on who receive a scholarship. I will communicate your input with the rest of the administrative board.

Some factors:
Haneene
Financial situation
High school score – Tawjehe –
Specialty
Gender
….etc.
In your opinion what is the right criteria that we should follow to choose applicants?
Thanks.

Mahdi,

Masha'Allah this is a very good initiative. In my opinion, the following are key factors that would influence my decision:

1- Financial Situation
2- Grades
3- Drive and Ambition
4- ExtraCurricular Activities

I don't think gender, specialty or anything else plays a role. I would want to give the scholarship based on merit and hard work. The most important and primary factor is Financial Situation. This is the purpose of these scholarships. Students who have the capability but have financial limitatons need this scholarship support which would make
their dreams come true.

Grades, having drive and ambition, and enrollment in extracurricular Activities are all secondary factors that can help you identify candidates who Insha'Allah will be able to take study seriously and finish successfully Insha'Allah.

I would suggest that you have them submit essays about themselves and why they think the board should choose them.
Afterwards, You would then interview them to further identify the candidates. Pray Istikhara once you choose the candidates.

I would like to caution that you should be fair and give equal number of scholarships to both male and female.

Another approach that I feel would be worthwile is to post candidate profiles (without Names & Gender) and have a poll on your website. Let members of the site help you. Please dont post family names, you know what might happen!!

I think financial situation and grades are very important factors. However, people of Beit Hanina have to be given the priority for many reasons. Firstly, these scholarships are intended for Hanayna as they are the ones who donated land for the purpose of education - part of their land and property is used by Al-Quds University. Secondly, we need to encourage students to stay in their homeland and not to take education as an excuse to leave home. We want more Hanyna here. Thirdly, graduates from Beit Hanina can do more to benefit their town than students who live in other places.

I support these scholarships and should be based on academic stature and previous commitment and scholarly work done. I know things are limited there thus making it difficult to achieve such expereince easily, but I would favor categorizing the scholarships into science-medicine, engineering, education, etc. these fields have to produce scholars in the field who will ential return the service to the community. I think it should be limited to people from BH and I support the girls getting it equally as the guys would as well. There should be a contest based on essay form and background expereince entrenched with those who have high academic grades and calibre to succeed. The overall thing is for the scholarships to be used wisely and make people succeed.

These schoalrships are provided to the people of Beit Hanina as the first choice and if there are no Hanayna candidates, the association will cosider candidates who aren't Hanayna. This is as Abdalla mentioned because the land was donated to the association by Hanayna.

The idea of having candidates write an essay is a great one and I will pass this idea to the association for sure.
